It didn’t feel right to leave Rex behind, but they had no choice. Rex would monitor the mission from his chamber in Phairo.

On their trip to pick up Melusine, they had also done an equipment run, securing weapons and comms, though not the special kind used by Veil Force.

They had used the Chinvat Gate to transport into an empty apartment just a block from MASC’s Turtle Bay headquarters.

“So we all know the plan,” Konstantin addressed the team. “Isobel and Melusine will go in the back using Zariya’s keycard and find a safe place to take down the wards. We will use the Gate to transport into the stairwell in the center of the building. Zariya, Isobel, Yara, and Daevin will proceed down to the vault. Melusine, Galu, Luiz, and I will make our way to the fourteenth floor, where the Under-Secretary’s office is located. Then we’ll talk.”

“We’ve got it,” Zariya said softly. “And Rocky still hasn’t been able to find any additional evidence of Cyriaque’s treason?”

“Unfortunately, no,” Rocky said. “But I did receive an encrypted packet from someone named Kimiko Nakamura. A friend of yours? I’m still decrypting it, but it looks like she may have uncovered Cyriaque’s private email server.”

Zariya’s eyes lit up like Christmas. “I knew she’d believe us!”

Relief flooded him. Konstantin hadn’t been so certain, but it looked like Kiki had come through after all. “Decrypt it as fast as you can and send it to me. That with the video showing Cyriaque taking the Chinvat Gate should be enough to make her listen. The authentication we had done shows that the tape hasn’t been tampered with.”

“It’ll work.” Galu nodded encouragingly.

“Is everyone ready?” Konstantin looked around. Besides Melusine and Isobel, who wore service uniforms pilfered from the MASC laundry, they were in plain clothes, with guns concealed under their jackets or in pant legs. They couldn’t risk going in with obvious armaments.

“Ready.” Zariya nodded, and the rest of the team echoed the sentiment.

“Ready here,” Rex said over comms.

Isobel nodded and gestured to Melusine. “Let’s get this started.”

Melusine gave Galu a thorough kiss.

Luiz raised his eyebrows at Isobel, who just snorted and headed out the door. Melusine quickly followed.

“Now comes the waiting. The worst part,” Daevin said under his breath.

“We won’t have to wait long.” Konstantin settled into a chair to conserve his strength.

Zariya came up next to him and stroked his hair. “You sure you’re up for this?”

He nodded. “We agreed. I’m the only one who knows Under-Secretary Pérez personally. And this revolves around me. I need to go. I’ll be fine.”

Zariya huffed. “Typical man, thinking everything revolves around you.” But she leaned down and kissed the top of his head.

“We’re in,” came Melusine’s voice over their communication link.

“That was quick,” Luiz said.

“How long did Isobel estimate it would take her to dismantle the wards?” Galu asked.

“Five minutes.” Luiz hit his watch. “We should be ready about—”

“Got it,” Isobel said triumphantly.

“Or five seconds,” Luiz amended. He turned his watch off. “Ready for this?”

Zariya looked at Konstantin, her eyes shining with love and utter trust.
